While Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country, the Ocean State is big on cat cafes. Bajah’s Cat Cafe put Rhode Island on the Cat Map as the state’s first cat cafe in July, 2021. Less than three years later, Bajah’s is a daily destination for locals, with a cafe serving a full menu of sandwiches and coffee delights and a cat lounge of top adoptable Rhody cats. With the debut of Coventry’s Mad Cats Lounge in April of 2024, the state now has two cat cafes. In fact, the calculation of per-capita-cat cafes, Rhode Island is top destination with one cafe per 550 thousand people!
While Rhode Island is currently the state with the lowest cat ownership (just 16% of households have a cat as a pet), perhaps the state’s cat cafes can inspire an upward trend. Since opening in 2021, Bajah’s Cat Cafe has found homes for over 300 hundred kitties! Currently, the new Mad Cats Cat Lounge only has resident cats to visit, but they may have adoptable cats in the future.
